Home office questions, answered plainly
How much should I spend on an ergonomic chair?
Prioritise adjustability over price. A chair with seat depth and adjustable lumbar support often starts in the mid-range, and refurbished premium chairs can offer the best value. See our chair rankings.
How long should I stand at a standing desk?
Alternate rather than stand all day. A common guide is roughly 20 minutes sitting, 8 minutes standing and 2 minutes moving every half hour.
How high should my monitor be?
The top of the screen should sit at or slightly below eye level, about an arm's length away and directly in front of you.
Is a dual-motor standing desk worth it?
For most people, yes. Dual-motor frames lift more evenly, carry more weight and are usually steadier at standing height. Compare models in our desk guide.
Are gaming chairs good for working from home?
Some are acceptable, but many lack seat depth adjustment and have restrictive bucket seats. A task chair usually suits long workdays better.
Should I buy a refurbished office chair?
Refurbished premium chairs from reputable dealers can be excellent value. Check the gas cylinder, mechanism and any remaining warranty.
What is the cheapest upgrade with the biggest impact?
For laptop users, a laptop riser with an external keyboard and mouse fixes the most common source of neck strain.
Does my employer have to provide home office equipment?
In Great Britain, the Display Screen Equipment Regulations 1992 apply to regular homeworkers. Employers should assess workstations and provide suitable equipment where needed.
Where should I place my desk relative to a window?
Place the screen at right angles to the window so daylight comes from the side, reducing glare and reflections. More in our layouts guide.
